The Marvels

Introduction:

Marvel Comics is the inspiration for the 2023 American superhero movie, The Marvels. It is a follow-up to the 2019 film Captain Marvel and the 33rd movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It was produced by Marvel Studios and released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Nia DaCosta, Megan McDonnell, and Elissa Karasik co-wrote the screenplay but directed the movie. Brie Larson plays Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris plays Monica Rambeau, and Iman Vellani plays Ms. Marvel. Other actors who appear in it include Gary Lewis, Park Seo-Joon, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Saagar Shaikh, Zawe Ashton, and Samuel L. Jackson. After starting to switch places with each other each time they use their powers, Danvers, Rambeau, and Khan form a team known as "the Marvels" in the movie.

In July 2019, Marvel Studios said that a Captain Marvel sequel is in the works. Following his work on the television miniseries WandaVision (2021), McDonnell was hired in January 2020, marking the start of development. Danvers, played by Larson, was scheduled to make a comeback in the first movie, and DaCosta was brought on board to helm it in August. Dec. saw the announcement that Parris would be playing WandaVision's Rambeau once more, while Vellani would be playing Ms Marvel's Kamala. In early May 2021, the title—which alludes to the three protagonists' shared abilities—was disclosed, and second unit filming in New Jersey started in mid-April 2021. Principal photography was conducted at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire and Longcross Studios in Surrey, England, as well as in Los Angeles and Tropea, Italy, between July 2021 and mid-May 2022. Post-production revealed Karasik's involvement.

Phase Five of the MCU saw the release of The Marvels in the United States on November 10, 2023, following its November 7, 2023, Las Vegas premiere. Critics gave it mixed reviews; some praised the three characters' chemistry, while others criticized the narrative and tone changes. Despite having a $274.8 million total production budget, The Marvels has made $197 million globally, making it the lowest-grossing movie in the MCU and a box office failure.

Plot:

The artificial intellect that governs the Kree empire, the Supreme intellect, is destroyed by Carol Danvers.[a] Over the following thirty years, this causes a civil war and the ruin of Hala, the homeworld of the Kree. The planet loses its sunshine, water, and air due to the fight, making it desolate.

One of the two fabled Quantum Bands is found by the new Kree commander, Dar-Benn. She uses the Band's power to rip open a jump point, a portal that permits quick space travel. The ensuing anomaly affects every jump point in the network, including one close to Nick Fury's S.A.B.E.R. space station. The jump point close to S.A.B.E.R. is investigated by Captain Monica Rambeau.

Danvers explores the newly opened jump point that Dar-Benn has created. When they make contact with their individual jump points, Danvers is taken to his place, Rambeau is taken to his location, Kamala Khan—the owner of the other Quantum Band on Earth—is taken to her location, and Kamala is taken to her home. After using their various light-based abilities to repel Kree's adversaries, the three demolish the Khan family house.

Following the three women's return to their respective locations, Fury and Rambeau pay Kamala a visit to Earth. According to Rambeau's theory, their light-based abilities are connected by quantum entanglement, and when any of the three uses their talents at the same time, they trade places.

Danvers assisted in founding a Skrull refugee colony on Tarnax, where the three met up to negotiate a peace pact with the Kree. After negotiations fail, Dar-Benn blasts open a second jump point, removing the atmosphere from Tarnax and bringing breathing air back to Hala. In a hurried attempt to leave the colony, Danvers, Rambeau, and Kamala organize into a group that Kamala refers to as "the Marvels". Danvers reveals that Dar-Benn is fusing her Quantum Band with the Kree's Universal Weapon and that the Quantum Bands were utilized to build the jump point transportation network. The network is becoming unstable due to Dar-Benn's frequent disruption of leap points, putting the entire universe in jeopardy. They conclude that Dar-Benn is aiming for worlds that hold significance for Danvers, whom he holds responsible for Hala's ruin.

Arriving at the ocean planet Aladna ahead of Dar-Benn, the Marvels get the locals ready for an assault. When Dar-Benn gets there, he rips open a jump point and draws water from the planet to Hala. When she nearly takes Kamala's Quantum Band, Kamala is forced to escape with Danvers and Rambeau. In the end, Dar-Benn intends to restore Hala's energy by using that of the Earth's sun. Dar-Benn is defeated by the Marvels after a battle, but not before she takes Kamala's Band and uses both bangles to rip open another space hole.

The deed divides realms, destroys Dar-Benn, and breaks the Marvels' bond. When Kamala recovers the Bands, she and Danvers energise Rambeau so that she may seal the opening from the other side, trapping Kamala in the process. After Kamala returns to Earth, Danvers uses her strength to fly into Hala's sun and repair it.

After their brief team-up, Kamala is inspired to find more young heroes and join a new squad, beginning with Kate Bishop. Rambeau awakens in a parallel reality during a scenario set during the credits. Hank McCoy, a mutant scientist, and Binary, a reincarnation of her mother Maria, welcome her.

Filming:

Principal photography was scheduled to start on May 31, 2021, but it actually started on July 26, 2021, at the Longcross Studios in Longcross, Surrey, England, and Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire. Cameraman Sean Bobbitt performed his duties. Shortly after Larson's confirmation that she had begun production on August 10, Samuel L. Jackson said that he would be reprising his role as Nick Fury in the MCU. Jackson was working on the project in London while getting ready to film Secret Invasion. Beginning on August 27, filming for The Marvels was conducted at Tropea, Italy, encompassing the Tyrrhenian Sea shoreline. Park departed for Los Angeles on September 3 to start production. Soon after, it was confirmed that Saagar Shaikh, Zenobia Shroff, and Mohan Kapur will be playing Kamala's mother Muneeba, father Yusuf, and elder brother Aamir from Ms. Marvel, respectively. The movie's October 2021 release date was pushed back to February 17, 2023. Park spent two months recording his parts, wrapping up his work in England by November 2. Comparing the magnitude and breadth of the movie to her collaboration with DaCosta on Candyman, production designer Cara Brower said it was enormous.54 sets were built at Pinewood and Longcross Studios for the production, which included spacecraft and five distinct planets, including Aladna, the S.A.B.E.R. space station, Maria Rambeau's home, and the Khan family's home. DaCosta desired a unique look for every planet.

The Marvels debuted on November 7, 2023, in Las Vegas. On November 8, it was released in South Korea; on November 10, it was released in IMAX, ScreenX, and 4DX in the US and China. The original plan was for Dune: Part Two to open on November 3 and play on all IMAX screens for a period of five to six weeks, therefore the movie was intended to have something other than an IMAX release. In August, when the movie was rescheduled for March 2024, IMAX Corporation CEO Richard Gelfond announced that if the SAG-AFTRA strike caused Dune: Part Two to be postponed, the business would switch to presenting The Marvels in IMAX theatres. The Marvels was originally slated to be released on November 11, 2022, July 28, 2023, February 17, 2023, and July 8, 2022. This was changed to November 20, 2023. It is included in the MCU's Phase Five.
